I am loving the tour and loving my time in Europe. It is so exciting to travel across the countryside and see more and more of Europe. We are now going to explore Germany and I'm so ready.

Connecting with Herr Jung. Feeling so moved by his personal stories of WWII. Also viewing Bacharach from the tower in the vineyards. Just breathtaking.

Tour Day 4

Travel Tip

  • Even with all the prep you do before your trip you are going to forget about certain things. So about a day before you arrive in a city read about the place and  make a final decision about what you want to do.

  • If you bring a dictionary of the other languages take a pic on your phone of the essential pages (I used my phone for photos) and reference it throughout the day. It’s much more lightweight than bringing the whole book.

  • Get your travel books spiral bound. Also consolidate your books into just the pages you need. Before the trip I took all the travel books I wanted to bring to Europe to a print shop. I then divided the pages I knew I absolutely wanted to bring and had them all bound together. That way I still had the travel books but just the parts that I needed. Also, having your books spiral bound makes them much easier to utilize. I did all of this for under $20.

For lunch we enjoyed sandwiches from the bakery and ate on the Rhine river.

For dinner we joined some tour buddies at the Rhein Hotel. We shared two appetizers- white asparagus and pâté. They were both delicious. The pate was the coolest. It was a slate plate with many different samples. I tried the chicken liver, goat cheese, and goat charcuterie. It was goooood. For the main entrée I enjoyed pork steak with potatoes and bacon. It was hearty and delicious. After dinner Mike and I took one last walk around the town and of course enjoyed some gelato.

I like the feeling of waking up in Bacharach. It is so beautiful. Today our day started with a walking tour of Bacharach with Herr Jung. Herr Jung has been doing Rick Steves tours for decades and I know why- he’s amazing. Herr Jung guided us to amazing parts of Bacharach. He told remarkable and moving stories. He talked about his relationship with America, his history with World War II, and just his life in general. There is no real way to perfectly articulate Herr Jung; he’s the kind of person that makes you want to be better. He is humble, real, and energetic. Eventually Herr Jung walked us to the top of Bacharach where locals grow grapes. The view was spectacular. I kept trying to breath it in because I couldn’t get enough.

Quote of the day

"First they gave us the bombs, then they gave us the bread." - Herr Jung speaking of the American's relationship with Germany during WWII.

After our time with Herr Jung we said our goodbyes (I felt like I was leaving a dear friend) and headed to St. Goar. When we first arrived we grabbed a portable lunch and ate on the riverwalk with some tour buddies. It was quite enjoyable.

After lunch we made our way to the Rheinfels Castle via hike. It was a pleasant, easy hike through the forest. The nature lover in me was in heaven! The Rheinfels castle was amazing and huge! We learned on our tour that the castle is actually a fraction of the original size. We toured the castle and saw the wine cellar (which was huge), the dungeon, a foxhole, and a mine.

After the tour we made our way back to Bacharach on a river cruise. It was beautiful. We cruised along the river and saw dozens of castles. Honestly, it felt kind of unreal. For dinner we joined some tour buddies and had a delicious meal!
